The Grace Hopper Celebration (GHC) is one of the world's largest gatherings of women and non-binary individuals in the technology field. Whether you are a student, software developer, cybersecurity specialist, data scientist, seasoned professional, or early in your career, GHC is for you.
What is the Grace Hopper Celebration?
The Grace Hopper Celebration is organized by AnitaB.org in partnership with the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). This conference cultivates a space where female technologists are intentionally brought to the forefront. Attendees can look forward to keynote speeches, interactive workshops, interview opportunities and networking, and panel discussions led by some of the best and brightest. In 2024, America Ferrera and Viola Davis made guest appearances, as well as the White House's very own Senior Advisor to the Federal Chief Information Officer, Noreen Hecmanczuk.
What is AnitaB.org?
Initially, when I explored the Grace Hopper Celebration, I discovered it was organized by AnitaB.org, a nonprofit focused on promoting women in computing. This organization was founded by Dr. Anita Borg in 1997, and aims to connect, inspire, and guide women in computing. The organization provides crucial resources, mentorship opportunities, and community support all in align with their mission to uplift and empower women in technology.
Who is Grace Hopper?
Grace Hopper (1906-1992) was a computer scientist and distinguished naval officer. I first learned about her as the individual who famously discovered the first computer bug—an actual moth trapped in a computer—leading to the popular term we use today. Beyond her technical skills, she passionately advocated for women in tech, often encouraging young women to pursue careers in science and engineering. The Grace Hopper Celebration embodies her vision of an inclusive tech community that supports diverse voices.
Why attend GHC?
There are truly so many reasons to attend GHC, from networking and career opportunities to learning about the latest and greatest in technology. The main reason I attended GHC '24 was, quite frankly, to see and meet other women like me—women who studied computer science, women who worked in cybersecurity. I also wanted to meet women I can aspire to be like—women who are successful, women who are technical, women who persevered, women who give me hope. I can confidently attest that GHC '24 did not disappoint.
A Final Thought
Attending a conference like GHC is not easy. The cost alone deters many, with registration fees above $1,000. Adding travel expenses, lodging, and meals, the total cost quickly reaches $2,000. On top of the financial investment, attending a conference alone in a city you have never visited is incredibly intimidating.
If you are someone with the means to make it work, my advice would be to go. You will not regret this experience, and you will return with a lasting feeling of empowerment. It is hard to describe the feeling of walking into the GHC opening ceremony with an audience of women that stretches on for miles, all intently anticipating the next days ahead. If there is one thing I can with complete certainty say about GHC, it's this. It feels like validation.
